A Mark of Distinction for Environment-friendly Shooting

Logo Grüner Drehpass

Since 2012, Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein has committed to ecological and sustainable reconsideration within the film industry through its Green Filming Permit. The environmental certificate will be awarded to environmentally conscious productions in or from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein and should encourage filmmakers to take some steps towards becoming eco friendly. We offer several workshops and individual consultations on the topics of light, energy, transport and set design, where we also show you all the modern possibilities - and that "green filming" doesn't necessarily mean "expensive filming"..

Setvisit of "Die Große Freiheit" in Geesthacht

When making a film, you'll usually find that thousands of plastic cups are thrown in the bin, while unfiltered diesel generators, car trips and plane journeys send between 600 and 1000 tonnes of CO2 into the air. FFHSH wants to support production companies in their attempts to run more ecological productions.
The Green Filming Permit is also an award that the productions can use to effectively document and communicate their contribution towards protecting the environment. Registering with Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein will highlight your professionalism, which can facilitate communication with location providers.

Who is eligible?

Any North German production that proves it is filming in a "green" way can get the permit. For short productions such as short films, promotional films and adverts, as well as show formats, the Green Filming Permit can be requested through the Film Commission following a consultation. Alongside the application form, the production company information, filming duration, crew list, current screenplay and daily scheduling, a list must be submitted containing precise information on how the producer will lower energy consumption in at least four of the six fields of action and film in an environmentally friendly way:

The reduction of electrical waste, the recycling of scenery and props, the use of biodegradable and reusable materials such as wood and fabrics.

The use of regional and seasonal produce, the reduction of plastic cups and plastic bottles, the use of own cups and drinking glasses, the general separation of waste.

The use of recycled paper, electronic call sheets, the double-sided printing of paper, the deployment of a “green runner” as environmental officer on the set, the separation of waste and the use of green electricity in the office.

Carpooling and the use of city-bikes for short and non-urgent errands, the use of energy-efficient lighting and fixed power sources on the set.

The use of energy-efficient lighting and fixed/rechargeable power sources on the set. Avoidance of generators.

In action

"Green filming" should be fun for the cast and crew and not have negative connotations. For this reason, it is important to us that saving measures are also communicated transparently before and during filming.
We suggest the following measures:

  • Talk to each department as soon as possible and ask for a list of potential eco saving measures
  • If possible, make one employee responsible for the "green" tasks in order to concentrate the responsibility
  • Hang a board at the catering trailer with a printed schedule and a tip of the day about the environment or with numbers on emissions and consumption
  • Keep photo documentation of the different measures taken in the production office and on set.

Hanseatische Material Verwaltung

Hanseatische Materialverwaltung is the main contact point for set building materials and ideas. It is where Hamburg’s cultural institutions, public schools, universities, artists and associations collect the materials they require for their social, ecological or creative projects. HMV collects materials and objects in a central warehouse, thereby creating an open collection that allows for the realization of new ideas – sustainable and creative!

Green Film Shooting

Based on a leaflet of the same title, which was published at the 2013 Berlinale, journalist Birgit Heidsiek tackles the issues of sustainability and environment protection in the film industry on her website. It features up-to-date news and background information on the topic of Green Film Shooting.
